An assortment of inspiration

So with temperatures below zero it was cold cycling to work today. But set against frosted ground, a frozen canal and pink sunrise sky, the plumes of smoke rising up from the sprawling industrial estate were strangely beautiful this morning.

“Traumgedanken” (“Thoughts on Dreams”) by Maria Fischer
A beautiful, stitched book about dreaming. Delicate threads, representative of the fragility of dreams, connect words and passages in the book.
Maria Fischer comments: “The book “Traumgedanken” (“Thoughts on dreams”) contains a collection of literary, philosophical, psychological and scientifical texts which provide an insight into different dream theories.”

Studio Visits With Artists and Designers

I have been thinking a lot about working space recently and why it’s important. Or how you make work, how do you get into the right head-space for it? And how does it work being an artist? What makes you an artist? When do you define yourself as an artist?

Sometimes I find going to open studio events more interesting than going to exhibitions in galleries. I think ideas and works in progress are fascinating. Anyway, I found this website today, and thought it was great. Photographs and interviews of artists and their working spaces, with their thoughts on the realities of being an artist.

Melvin the Magical Mixed Media Machine by studio HEYHEYHEY.

A type of Rube Goldberg machine, Melvin makes t-shirts and bags and films his audience, with parachutes and umbrellas as an extra feature.

With Melvin and the previously posted Flow by Owl Project, I seem to have fallen for beautifully crafted machines this month.

Flow by Owl Project.
Commissioned for 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Flow will use a waterwheel on the river Tyne to power this mechanical musical structure. I saw this as a work in progress at Rogue Open Studios on Friday in Owl Project’s studio space. The bellows made a lovely hooting sound. A fascinating project… I’m looking forward to seeing the completed piece installed next year.

Nomad by Swiss architects 1/100.
A series of five wooden cabins which are installed at Quai Branly Museum in Paris this summer.
Temporary, fleeting structures become a central hub and create a festival atmosphere in the gardens of the museum. Each caravan has a different use and promotes interactions in the city and at the museum. There is a stage, a sound system, an ice cream stand, a space for children and an information cabin.
Perhaps the caravans and informal atmosphere they create helps to give visitors to the museum a different experience or encourages more people to visit.
